Homeowners, on the other hand, often need repairs for their roofs, especially after heavy storms or when new ones appear. In these cases, the homeowners need to call a roofing contractor, usually the homeowner’s neighbor or a friend who knows how to do roof maintenance. However, before calling a roofing contractor, homeowners should know some basic facts about roof repairs.
One fact that many people do not know is that roofers actually belong to different unions or groups. For example, the National Roofing Contractors’ Association (NRCA) is a professional association that represents a group of roofing contractors. Other organizations are the United States Roofing Contractors’ Association (USOCA) and the National Home Repair Supervisors (NHRPS). These two larger national groups represent a much broader range of roofers and others in the roofing industry. Homeowners should ask their local union or association if the roofer they need help to belong to one of these groups.
Another important fact that homeowners should consider is whether they are hiring a general repair person or a specialist to do their roof repairs. Some roofers are general contractors that do a single roof job and charge a flat rate. Other roofing contractors have specialized training and may charge an hourly fee or a per-job rate. Even if homeowners are hiring a contractor to repair their roof, it is crucial to make sure that this individual is experienced with the kind of roof they want to have repaired as well as know how to properly take care of the materials that will be used to repair their roof.
Roofers also belong to a professional association called NACE or the National Contractors Association. Members of NACE are required to take an annual examination to measure their ability to perform the specific duties required by their contract. Every state requires its roofing contractors to participate in an examination by the National Contractors Association to make sure that the members of the association are qualified to perform their jobs to the highest standards possible. Homeowners should inquire with their local NACE office if their prospective roofing contractors are on the registry of members in good standing.
Before calling a roofing contractor, homeowners should first know if they can get a hold of their prospective contractor by contacting their local Better Business Bureau. A business that has been registered with the bureau is most likely a reputable one and is likely to give the homeowner good service. The service provider should be able to provide the names of previous customers, along with their telephone numbers. When calling the service provider, homeowners should ask whether or not the contractor they have been engaging in business with was able to complete the job on time. A good contractor should be able to give a reasonable amount of time for the roofing job to be completed.
During the roof inspection, the roofer should check for leaks, damaged flashing, missing tiles, exposed nails, broken shingles and other hazards. If a roofer finds any problems with the home, the next step would be to make arrangements for the repairs and maintenance. If the homeowner agrees to pay for the repairs and maintenance, the roofer should give them a written estimate of all work that will be involved. Doing this may prevent unnecessary complications and allow time for the homeowner to do other necessary things such as putting up Christmas lights or buy a new couch.
